PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
JULY 19, 2008

We fished the Escambia River for our July tournament. We had 14 members looking for the elusive bass that live in the Escambia. The weather was hot with highs of 90+ and partly cloudy skies. Water temp was 85 in most areas and was stained to muddy the further up stream you fished.
We had an incoming tide for most of the day.

I drew out with Mack Cramer (aka Mr. Buzz Bait and other names that I can't mention here). We made plans and decided to start in the lower sections of the river system. We had hopes that between the two of us we could find something that would work and produce a few keepers.

We started our throwing buzzbaits along grass on the main river. We caught several small bass but no keepers. We fished several creeks across the delta and caught several fish each but no keepers. Finally in a small feeder gut Mack caught a keeper. We kept working hard but only could get short fish. I managed to hook a keeper size fish only to have it come off at the boat. Bad error on my part in playing the fish to the boat. It turned out to be the worst scenario I could have had because it would have at least given me 6th place. Although the fishing was terrible I had a very enjoyable day fishing with Mack. We laughed and cut up all day and managed to make a bad fishing day enjoyable.

The Escambia maintained its reputation for being a low production water system. It put the worst whipping on our group that we've had in a long time. Only 5 guys brought a keeper to the scales. All five of them had only one fish each. Lee "You Da Man" Brannon took the win with 1 fish @ 1.48 lbs. That was also the lunker! Caught it on a chug bug early. Mack "Mr. Buzz Bait" Cramer was 2nd with a giant weighing .94 lbs. !!! Caught it on a worm. Rallying to grab 3rd was Marc "Mr. Smooth" Chruchwell with a beauty weighing .93 lbs. Nailing down the 4th slot was Jeff "The Sleeper" Weaver who caught his fish under an umbrella on a worm. While I don't usually mention the 5th spot it is appropriate this month as anyone who managed a keeper deserves mention. Jim "Mr. Hook 1" Bailey managed to catch his biggest fish of the year to grab 5th place.
It weighed .72 lbs!!!!!

Next month we fish the Alabama River out of Holly Creek. Fishing is tough down here this time of the year, but that area offers some of the best potential for good production in our region during the dog days. Remember to keep hydrated when on the water and prepare yourself for the heat. Also it's a good time to keep a can of bug spray in the boat just in case you find a swarm of gnats or yellow flies. Make plans to attend both the meeting and the tournament. Good participation is fundamental if a club is going to continue to be successful. August will be our last short tournament of the year and the tournament will end at 2PM. Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting and the tournament.

Til next time Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
